Akara 2.0 is an open-source (Apache2 license) Web framework specialized for RESTful data services, especially involving XML and other semi-structured formats. Akara is a tool for data architects and developers who express data models and create transforms based on these data models, plugging required inputs and outputs (XML, JSON, CSV, Atom, etc.) together into pipelines which implement the desired services. These services are made available on the Web using simple wrappers based on REST concepts, among other things making it easy to discover and reuse the services, and to connect them to local and remote systems using Web triggers (AKA Web hooks).

Akara simplifies extract-transform-load (ETL), data-driven integration of systems, and makes it easy to wrap Web sites and services, turning tag soup and painful APIs into clean, RESTful end-points. Zepheira uses Akara heavily, in projects for The Library of Congress and Semio Clinical, among others, and provides commercial data transform services via Akara.

At the beginning of March 2010, in Boulder, Colorado, Zepheira hosted a summit and sprint for development on the project, with invited developers from Zepheira's extended network, and its clients. The focus was on solidifying the open source project, and working on improvements motivated by recent deployments of Akara. The summit was held at Boulder Millennium Harvest House. Topics ranged from rules-based XML processing in streaming mode (for high performance) to improved support for HTTP Caching, packaging, deployment, internationalization and more. Andrew Dalke posted notes on the proceedings.

Linking Enterprise Data

A book edited by David Wood, Eric Miller and Uche Ogbuji, Zepheira, USA

To be published by Springer Science+Business Media

I. Introduction

Linking Enterprise Data is the application of Semantic Web architecture principles to real-world information management issues faced by commercial, not-for-profit and government enterprises. The term LED is a play on Linking Open Data (LOD), a community project started by the World Wide Web Consortium's Semantic Web Education and Outreach Interest Group aimed at exposing data sets to the Web in standard formats and actively relating them to one another with hyperlinks.

Enterprise data is growing at a much faster rate than traditional technologies allow. The World Wide Web is the only information system we know that scales to the degree that it does and is robust to both changes and failure of components. Most software does not work nearly as well as the Web does. Applying the Web's architectural principles (not necessarily the public World Wide Web itself) for enterprise problems may be the only way to effectively address the current and future information glut. Challenges remain, however, because the use of distributed architectures requires enterprises to give up the central control and planning traditionally applied by IT departments.

II. Objective of the Book

This book aims to provide practical approaches to addressing common information management issues by the application of Semantic Web and Linked Data research to production environments. The approaches taken are based on international standards. The book is to be written and edited by leaders in Semantic Web and Linked Data research and standards development and early adopters of Semantic Web and Linked Data standards and techniques.

III. Target Audience

This book is meant for Semantic Web researchers and academicians, and CTOs, CIOs, enterprise architects, project managers and application developers in commercial, not-for-profit and government organizations concerned with scalability, flexibility and robustness of information management systems. Not-for-profit organizations specifically include the library and museum communities.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - Business, technical and social values of applying Web architecture to enterprise content, such as the means by which deployment agility, resilience and reuse of data may be accomplished - Building of social (human-centered) communities to curate distributed data - Enterprise infrastructure for Linking Enterprise Data - Persistent Identifiers for the Web, life sciences, libraries and memory organizations - Linking the government cloud - Applications of Linked Data to enterprises, such as drug discovery, clinical information, organizational learning or curation of/access to distributed information - Publishing large-scale Linked Data

IV. Publisher

This book is scheduled for publication by Springer Science+Business Media. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit . This publication is scheduled to be released in 2011.

Government Computer News (GCN) has named the Library of Congress (LoC) National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) as one of the top federal information technology projects of 2009. The award was presented during the annual GCN Annual Awards Gala on October 22.

GCN gave the award to NDIIPP because of its success in working with universities and libraries to model distributed preservation practices, working with state consortiums to help in the preservation of state government digital information, and working with commercial content providers to develop standards for digital preservation.

"We are honored to receive this award," said Laura Campbell, associate librarian for strategic initiatives. "The credit really goes to our excellent network of partners around the country who have worked with us to save valuable digital content and keep it accessible over time. Digital preservation is a challenge that demands new kinds of outreach, engagement and collaboration."

The GCN Awards, now in their 22nd year, embody one of the most sought-after and respected accolades in the government IT community, recognizing federal, state and local government project teams for extraordinary IT accomplishments and significant contributions to the performance of their agencies.

This award comes quickly on the heels of the recent European Conference on Digital Libraries (ECDL) "best in show" award for specific collaboration within the NDIIPP program between LoC and Zepheira. That honor went to Project Recollection, a software platform developed by Zepheira that allows archival communities to easily publish, style, connect and share digital collections on the Web. It is currently in a pilot phase, but has already elicited interest throughout LoC and other government institutions.

The mission of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) is to develop a national strategy to collect, preserve and make available significant digital content, especially information that is created in digital form only, for current and future generations. In 2008, the NDIIPP partners shared content through a simple web page. In order to explore more useful tools and processes for sharing diverse content across partners’ collections, the Library began the Project Recollection Pilot in 2009 with Zepheira to develop a proof of concept that can be used to collect and explore information about digital collections.

ALA Techsource has published an overview of the American Library Association (ALA) Grassroots Program "From Legacy Data to Linked Data: Preparing Libraries for Web 3.0". The published description of this event:

'From Legacy Data to Linked Data: Preparing Libraries for Web 3.0. “How can library cataloging data be transformed to function within ‘Web 3.0′ and be understood by non-library web applications? Speakers from both the library and Semantic Web communities will explore the situation in a non-technical manner and describe current work underway to transform legacy library data into linked data.“'

managed to draw enough interest to pack the room and spill out well into the hallway. Shirley Lincicum has summarized the discussion and provided some fantastic coverage for those unable to attend. In this summary, Shirley cites the synergistic work between the Resource Description and Access (RDA) efforts and those of the Linked Data community. The panel built on this specific synergy as just one example of several that exist between between the Library and Web industries.

'Linked data is a promising new platform for creating and sharing exactly the type of metadata that catalogers have been creating and managing for decades.... After years of uncertainty and hype, catalogers now have real support to transform they way they work and make ever more valuable contributions to the evolving information space on the Web.'

The Semantic Technology Conference is the premier semantic technologies event held every year in June in San Jose CA. SemTech is the place where the industry comes together for four days of tutorials, workshops and talks on the future of the Web, marketing, search and discovery. The event is run by Wilshire Conferences which has a reputation of running some of the best conferences in the industry related to the trends in data management and associated technologies. Another Wilshire conference to look for each year is Enterprise Data World.

In summary, this year's conference was a big success. Why? First, conference attendance grew in a year where the economy has caused many conferences to falter. In addition, while in years past an undercurrent of questions about whether semantic technologies were "ready for primetime" seemed to linger, this year was different. This year the lingering questions were less about "if" and more about "how". There to answer such questions and announce major investments in the space were the three major search engine companies: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft.

The expo held more booths this year and there was a constant flow of people wanting to find out more about the tools available to support implementation of semantic technologies. There were even tools that allow the average non-technical user to participate in the Semantic Web such as Zepheira's Freemix and Cambridge Semantics Anzo.

Open data was a recurring theme. More and more organizations are making their data open and available, encouraging its linkage to other data sets. An announcement by the New York Times about the NYT Annotated Corpus and the NYT Index being released to the "Linked Data Cloud" generated a great deal of buzz in this regard.

Finally, the upward trend in practical use cases continued. One example was Chime Ogbuji's talk about his work at Cleveland Clinic to create a clinical informatics framework improve the Clinic’s ability to use patient data for generating new knowledge and improve future patient care. Another example was the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) discussion on their launch of an ontology and associated services to manage, exchange and integrate geopolitical information at corporate level and with international partners.

There's still a long way to go to provide friendly ways for the average user to participate and to help organizations understand the benefits and where and how these technologies should be used. From the momentum gained over the course of the past year, it's a good bet that we will see a lot more on this front at next year's conference.

Dates for next year's conference have been posted.

Leigh Dodds performs an evaluation of the new Freemix service launched by Zepheira in June. Leigh found Freemix to be one of the most interesting applications shown at SemTech 2009 and he was curious to know whether Freemix could be used to build presentations of Linked Data.

To perform this experiment, he feeds both BBC data and NASA space flight data to Freemix from the Talis Platform. He explores the options for extracting data using a SPARQL query in order to build a presentation in Freemix.

The Spring 2009 issue of PricewaterhouseCoopers's Technology Forecast focuses on semantic technology. It features an interview with Zepheira partner Uche Ogbuji and highlights Zepheira's overall contributions. In the interview, 'From folksonomies to ontologies', Mr. Ogbuji discusses how early adopters are introducing Semantic Web to the enterprise, '[describing] department-level Linked Data initiatives and how grassroots efforts can lead to companywide successes'. He focuses on the balance of technical and social matters within the firewall, and overall on pragmatics rather than technological purity.

'What we typically do on an engagement is try to capture what I would call schematic information, which is information about what relates to what. They’re deceptively simple links between entities in one silo and entities in another silo, so we’re not talking about a huge, formal, scientific, top-down modeling exercise. We’re talking about links that are almost at the level of social tagging, almost at the folksonomy level.

'We’ve found that when you provide a basis for people to say that this entity, this sort of information in this silo relates to this other sort of information in this silo, then the people who are involved fill in the nooks and crannies. You don’t have to have this huge engineering effort to try to force a shared model between them.

'So I think the benefit that department heads get from something like Semantic Web technology is that it’s designed to go from very slim threads and very slim connections, and then have those strengthened over time through human intervention. There’s a large social element in building shared models, and once you have built those shared models, you have the social benefit of having people enfranchised in it. Some organizations had a situation where trying to do data governance was warfare, because of the competing initiatives. Now you have given people the capability to do it piecemeal collaboratively, and you have less of the warfare and more of the cooperation aspect, which improves the system that they’re developing.'

PURL Server version 1.5 has been released and is recommended for all PURL server operators.

Version 1.5 of the PURL server subtly changes the relationship between PURLs and domains to better support legacy PURLs. Domains may now be created that contain PURLs of the same name (that is, a PURL with a name corresponding to an empty string or a '/' character).

PURLs may now be created with names that differ only by a trailing '/' (e.g. /net/foo and /net/foo/).

These features were added in support legacy PURL migration. Naming new PURLs with these patterns is not encouraged.

No reported bugs were addressed in this release. However, some additional URL-encoding of form elements was added to the Web user interface to better support special characters.

PURL Server version 1.5 is available from:

The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program is an effort funded by the US Library of Congress to develop a national strategy to collect, archive and preserve the burgeoning amounts of digital content for current and future generations. It is based on an understanding that digital stewardship on a national scale depends on active cooperation between communities in public and private sectors. The Library has built a preservation network of over 130 partners from across the nation to tackle the challenge, and is working with them on a wide spectrum of initiatives including collections of historical, scientific, cartographical, media, legislative and sociological materials.

Such digital content grows in value exponentially as it is integrated and interconnected. The Library is collaborating with Zepheira to develop a pilot platform (codename Recollection) to allow communities of interest to interconnect their information. The pilot platform will use semantic technologies to enhance discoverable access for NDIIPP collections, making them easier to find, access, and share, and especially to integrate with other digital information sources. The resulting platform will enable third-party applications developed by private or public organizations as well as interested individuals to support education, research, policy analysis and other completely unforeseen uses. Zepheira is developing the framework to identify, locate and reuse information in NDIIPP collections, and an open interface for third parties, to plug services and applications into that framework. Zepheira is a leading global provider of services applying Semantic technology and Web architecture to problems of information integration, especially to support collaboration and social computing.

Laura Campbell, chief information officer of the US Library of Congress, is featured in "Bye, Tech: Dealing With Data Rot", a segment on the CBS Sunday Morning television program, March 1, 2009. In the program David Pogue reported on the dangers of data loss--"what happens when technological progress leaves your most precious memories and recordings behind." He also interviewed experts on digital preservation, including the discussion with Campbell, regarding the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program.

NDIIPP is an effort funded by by The Library to develop a national strategy to collect, archive and preserve the burgeoning amounts of digital content for current and future generations. Zepheira is launching a joint project with the NDIIPP program to showcase the tremendous value of digital information being preserved for current and future generations.

As noted in the program, since the early '90s, Campbell has overseen the Library's contribution to NDIIPP, a multimillion-dollar effort to digitize the most precious holdings, both to preserve them and to make them available to the public on the Internet. She said:

"Well, really, what we're trying to do is to save our collective memory, to be able to pass on human record of our time"

Among The Library's holdings are the world's largest collection of movies and recorded sound, as well as 56 million manuscripts, six million maps, and a million and a half rare books, which helps explain Campbell's keen interest in preservation. Some of this material, in digitized form, will become more readily accessible through Zepheira's contribution of an open data and services framework.

On April 7th Eric Miller and Uche Ogbuji will be presenting "Websheets - Web-based Data Integration

Here is the abstract of the presentation:

Spreadsheets. We can't live with them. We can't live without them. More importantly, the people who run our lines of business can't live without them. We want an overall, integrated picture of enterprise information, but many things get in the way, and spreadsheets are often the largest blockers. This doesn't have to be the case. A spreadsheet just represents a local point of view, a local concern. We should embrace this reality, and work to integrate it into our centralized information plans, rather than acting at cross-purposes to real users. Luckily, we can harness the power of the greatest integration platform ever: The Web. This presentation is a discussion and demonstration of practical tools for integrating spreadsheets into unified but flexible information management systems. Importantly, it covers techniques for monitoring and reporting on trends and patterns in the use of such systems, so that you can offer users the carrot of better collaboration, and less duplication of work, while using the dashboard results of spreadsheet usage to design your enterprise information systems around actual user needs and user patterns. Learn how to gain the benefits of master data management without disenfranchising the most important users.

Industry experts have been awakening recently to the exceptional power of the Web to integrate information systems, and how it should be applied within the enterprise. You've heard of Enterprise 2.0, Enterprise Mashups and the like. These are generally shallow attempts to translate Web concepts to traditional IT. It is important not to miss the key ingredient for successfully harnessing the power of Web architecture--semantic technology. We all know the power of the Web comes with chaos--wide-ranging workflow conventions, malware and more. Semantic technology adapts traditional business analysis and enterprise architecture to temper the chaos without losing the power.

This session connects the prevailing industry trend towards Semantic technology to the characteristics of enterprises, giving you tools for assessing your organization's readiness, and determining the best launch points. It's a practical guide using specific case studies to help you get started using semantic technology to finally reconcile information technology with business imperatives, and to save costs and avoid failures in architecture and integration projects.

Bob DuCharme

interviewed

Uche Ogbuji about the concept and application of Linked Data. Ogbuji's

talk

will help anchor next week's Linked Data Planet conference.

"Think of how we traditionally deal with data in informatics. We look to fit data into neat partitions, shepherd it along neat lines and fit it into grand unified theory. All good, hard science. The problem is that data isn't so easily quantized. It's a living , temperamental entity that absorbs bits of personality from everyone who touches it. Dealing effectively with data requires art, and at Zepheira we really look to the art of data rather than to the science of code. We think adopting the right conventions for data that accommodate its unpredictable qualities is the key to so many of the problems that have dogged IT, and we believe that the web is the most successful set of conventions in this regard. In general we look to apply web architecture to enterprise problems. This brings us right in line with the Linked Data concept, which is really just a way to distill the essential keys to web architecture in a way any developer could tick off his fingers. At Zepheira we start with such principles as the body of art, and we bring together folks who've have proven themselves as journeymen and masters in this art, and we think this positions us to offer particularly effective solutions to our customers."

"At Zepheira we tend towards techniques popularized in (Linked Open Data), but clearly for most of our clients the data can't be thrown into a cloud of public data, so we've added our own refinements leading to what we've started to call Linking Enterprise Data (LED) to increase the definition of the Linked Data principles as applied to organizational data integration and decision support needs."

Highlighting a popular speaker at the

No Fluff Just Stuff

conferences, Jared Richardson posted a

video interview

with Zepheira partner

Brian Sletten

. Brian discussed the most important topics for developers looking to boost their careers, and emphasized one area where they can make a real difference for their employers.

"We spend too much time struggling to get access to our own data. There are schisms between business and the the rules they want to enforce (such as access control) and the information technologies in place to make this available to them. We've thrown a lot of money down the drain trying to do integration at the relational DB level, the Enterprise Application Integration level, even at the Services Oriented Architecture level. While there's a lot of great ideas in that space, it's really the wrong level for integration.

"Our position is that the Web is the biggest, most successful, scalable example of software architecture that gives you access to data in terms of issuing requests for logical names and getting back physical representations. It also gives you the flexibility to change the back ends, to change the intermediaries, and allow people to add value on the edge. They can consume information over here, do some processing on it and republish it....

"When we look at trying to expose information in the enterprise—I don't care what company you work for, your data integration needs are not bigger and more diverse, and needing to be more scalable than the entire world's, so these technologies have been tremendously successful and you should look for ways to adopt them in your organization."

This week

Semantic Universe

launched a new site for the

Semantic Technology Conference 2008

. The conference organizers, intent on demonstrating the practical value of the technology featured at this conference, hired

Zepheira

to develop a site with innovative features to benefit attendees, speakers and other participants.

The site features a personalized conference

Scheduler

, a dynamic user interface based on the

the

MIT Picker

tool which allows the user to quickly look at the available sessions on the schedule, narrowing down choices by facets such as speakers, dates and subject matter, and using common features such as search, pagination, and bookmarking favorites. The user can then select sessions to create a custom schedule, which can be exported to iCal format for incorporation into most popular calendar software. The user can also export other views of the data such as RDF/XML and JSON.

The user can also click through to see session details, and the site provides

Weblog features for conference sessions

, including the ability for people to comment on sessions, and track the discussion through

Atom

feeds. Contributing comments requires log-in through

OpenID

, showcasing the popular, decentralized standard for single sign-on.

Zepheira president Eric
Miller makes a presentation, "Weaving a Web of Data" at the TTI/Vanguard Boston conference on 25 September 2007. The presentation discusses the role of of Web technology in enterprise systems, addressing an audience of executives. The theme of the conference is "The Wealth of Networks", and sessions will look beyond "Web 2.0" technologies to a new generation of pervasive networks anticipated to cause further disruption and opportunities. "A wealth of networks allows for smoother collaboration as data and applications quickly make their way to the Web. With networks everywhere, where data resides no longer matters, as long as it’s easily accessible. Software running on laptops may soon fade away, as Web-resident apps get rented, shared, shifted, rebuilt, and mashed up."

Zepheira and OCLC Online Computer Library Center announced today that
they will work together to rearchitect OCLC's Persistent URL (PURL)
service to more effectively support the management of a "Web of data."
The software developed will be released under an Apache 2 Open Source
Software license allowing PURLs and the PURL infrastructure to be used
in various applications for public or proprietary use. PURLs provide a
level of indirection that allows the underlying Web addresses of
resources to change over time without negatively affecting systems
that depend on them. This capability provides continuity of
references to network resources that may migrate from machine to
machine for business, social or technical reasons. The new PURL
software will also be updated to reflect the current understanding of
Web architecture as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
This new software will provide the ability to permanently identify
networked information resources, such as Web documents, as well as
non-networked resources such as people, organizations, concepts and
scientific data. This capability will represent an important step
forward in the adoption of a machine-processable "Web of data"
enabled by the Semantic Web.

OCLC identified Zepheira for their expertise with Semantic technology
and retained their services for the design and implementation effort
required to bring the PURL service to its full potential. Zepheira's
work on identification technology on the scale of the Web dovetails
with their solutions to help organizations manage and integrate data
scattered within their walls. PURL software is also an important
component in many of Zepheira's enterprise solutions.

"We are very excited to be taking on this work because one of the most
important principles for Zepheira is that developments towards a
Semantic Web can be carefully tuned and scaled to meet the immediate
needs of businesses, while valuable experience from solving enterprise
needs can bring focus to Semantic Web efforts. This project for OCLC
is a clear embodiment of this interchange, and helps establish Zepheira's
place at the vanguard of data integration as well as enabling the Semantic Web." --
Eric Miller, President, Zepheira

EWeek has published an story by Jim Rapoza discussing the Semantic Web. In
"Spinning the Semantic Web", Jim interviews Eric Miller of Zepheira and Tim Berners-Lee of the W3C on the increased recognition of need for technologies to assist in semantic integration of data in the Enterprise and on the Web. Even when high profile companies choose not to use specific Semantic Web technologies, it is possible to convert their proprietary data into standard and reusable forms for additional linkage in a web of data. EWeek concludes:

"Our take is that the Semantic Web will eventually succeed, as it holds too many benefits for too many people to fall by the wayside. But it's also likely that the Semantic Web won't come about in the exact same way that many people envision. The lesson of the Web 2.0 technologies is that users are often surprising in the way they utilize new technologies. Miller told us that he had already seen businesses using Semantic Web technologies in interesting and unexpected ways." "Spinning the Semantic Web", 29 May 2007.
