The Library of Congress began a pilot project in 2009 with Zepheira, LLC to develop a proof of concept that can be used to collect and explore information about digital collections. The result is a software platform called Recollection. Project Recollection was presented by Laura Campbell, Associate Librarian for Strategic Initiatives for The Library of Congress, and Eric Miller, President of Zepheira at the 13th European Conference on Digital Libraries held in Corfu, Greece September 27 – October 2, 2009. On July 27, 2009 Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) upgraded their PURL server to a new open source platform built by Zepheira. OCLC’s upgrade reflects their continued support to provide persistent, stable World Wide Web (WWW) addresses for the international library and education community, government, business, and non-profit organizations, and private citizens. OCLC’s PURL server currently resolves approximately two million PURLs per day.
